Artificial intelligence as a creative tool for type designers
Maria Ribeiro

Digital fonts were first introduced worldwide during the later decades of the 20th century when typography transitioned from metallic letters to digital ones. From that point on, the idea of a foundry changed. Instead of having several specialized workers, we have one person in front of a computer doing everything alone from scratch. Now we are witnessing the shift to a person who acknowledges when he requires assistance from the machine.

While many people see AI as a threat, research has ultimately shown that AI may be a valuable tool for those who think, design, and create, and it’s presented as a potential tool to assist the designer in the creative process, instead of a threat to professional activity. Validation comes through interviews with specialists, in combination with research and analysis of study cases.

The ultimate goal of this dissertation is to promote the benefits of AI usage such as productivity, efficiency, and creativity.
