Friedlander Neue
Espécimen
Eunice Bastos, Francisca Rebelo and Rita Melo
The specimen, made for the Type Design curricular unit, is the culmination of our quotation of Elizabeth Friedlander’s work. It describes her patterns and Elizabeth Friedlander’s original typeface.

The typeface Friedlander Neue, presented in the specimen, is not only a way of preserving the memory of an important typographer but also a tribute to all women designers and typographers who, despite the constraints of their social and political contexts, fought for equality and for their work to be valued.
The specimen opens with a short poem by Francis Meynell dedicated to Elizabeth and her lovely face (typeface). A red insert presents the original drawings of the typeface and the results of the group’s experimentation through drawing.
Next comes the display of the characters, in a direct comparison between large and small scale, in the different weights.
The new section on red paper presents more technical drawings, addressing the dimensions, widths and heights of the different parts of the glyph anatomy, and details, through enlargements and close-ups.
