The Design Issue
Maria Julia Ribeiro

An experimental editorial publication for Advanced Studies in Editorial Design and Typography, starting from the relationship between typography, discourse and design. It explores typography’s ability to act not only as a vehicle for content but as a visual, expressive and compositional element.

Limited to black and white and without non-typographic images, the publication builds its language solely from letters, words, weights, scales, rhythms and relationships between text and space. Typography is manipulated to create contrasts, textures and visual tensions, setting up a dialogue between the formal dimension of the page and the analytical content.

The editorial structure weaves together excerpts from texts on design and typography, including “About the Word Design” by Vilém Flusser, “Under the Surface of Style” and “Typography as Discourse” (1988). Through typographic composition, the texts are both information and graphic matter, encouraging different ways of reading and interpreting.

Designed to be read, leafed through and looked at, the publication balances legibility and experimentation, turning typography itself into a tool for reflecting on design, communication and the visual construction of discourse.
