R.I.P. (Rest in Pixel)
Afonso Ribeiro, Joana Teles and João Sousa
R.I.P. (Rest in Pixel) is a typeface designed for the Type Design course, whose drawing starts from the idea of visual degradation caused by progressively lowering pixel resolution, in four distinct weights that trace this gradual transformation. Strongly inspired by Chicago, designed in 1984 by Susan Kare for Apple, R.I.P. revisits the aesthetics of teletext typefaces. Variable-font technology made it possible to create a typeface that pixelates progressively across its instances, moving from a high-definition drawing to a low-fidelity rendering. R.I.P. thus explores the relationship between legibility, resolution and visual memory, reinterpreting graphic references tied to early digital interfaces and the electronic communication systems of the 1980s and 1990s.
