Pictograms as universal communication tools in drug administration: A graphic design project to improve health literacy
Sérgio Brito
This project proposes a modular system of pictograms to improve health literacy in medicine administration. Misinterpretation of instructions causes severe health risks, especially among vulnerable groups such as illiterate people, the elderly, and individuals with cognitive difficulties. By integrating clear visuals into existing practices—pharmacy-printed stickers, prescriptions—the system aims to reduce errors, strengthen health literacy, and promote safer self-administration of medicine. User surveys and professional feedback informed the design, emphasizing clarity, context, and consistency. While further testing and development are needed, the project demonstrates how visual communication can bridge literacy gaps, improve patient autonomy, and promote equity in healthcare. It provides a strong foundation for a standardized system with the potential for international adoption, ensuring that essential medical information becomes universally accessible.
