Casa-Tipo, Tipo-Casa — Arquitectura como manifesto tipográfico
André do Carmo Gonçalves

This book arises from the confluence of architecture and typography, not only as subjects of research but as the structuring principles of its own editorial construction. In studying cases where the word is deeply inscribed in the architectural identity of buildings, a coherent gesture was chosen: to think of the book as architecture.

Every section, every graphic detail, was conceived with an underlying architectural thinking. The way the reader moves through these pages reflects the experience of inhabiting a space. So we open with a façade, cross a threshold, are welcomed by doors, led along corridors of text and surprised by windows that open onto contemplation. We move through distinct rooms, through an outdoor space where one breathes the interval between one idea and another, and even typographic silence.

The layout takes on the role of foundation and structure: it supports the content, distributes the order, balances the volumes. The typographic columns rise like pillars supporting the narrative; a footer as foundation; the grid, as an invisible foundation, gives form and stability to what might otherwise be mere dispersion.

In this game of mirrors, architecture becomes language and language builds space. This publication therefore sets out not only to document buildings but to take on, itself, the role of a building — typographic, conceptual, habitable.

May the reader move through it as one moves through a house: with attention, surprise and meaning.
