Fractals / Fractais
Cláudia Martina, Bruna Chichavel, João Sousa and Luís Lopes
“Fractals / Fractais” is a bilingual publication divided into three volumes. The project was developed as a group in response to a brief proposed by another group in the Project curricular unit (made up of Maria Luísa Pinto, Roberta Miranda and Victoria Borges Brites), which called for a coffee-table book exploring fractal forms in relation to nature and human beings.

The publication’s identity and visual aesthetic were inspired by these infinite, self-similar geometric forms found in nature, carrying these motifs into the design and layout: a geometric, monospaced typeface for titles and subheadings, and a selection of vibrant, saturated colors that interact with one another, creating infinite pairs. To clearly mark the publication’s bilingual nature, two different typefaces were used, one for each language: a serif typeface for Portuguese and a sans serif for English.
The three volumes are brought together in an outer slipcase that combines the three main colors in one of the best-known fractal examples: the Mandelbrot set.
