Haircuts for men
Jorge Santos Duarte
Project 2 of the Project curricular unit, supervised by Professor Eduardo Aires, set out mainly to favor understanding of the process of creating the artifact over the final result. The aim was to steer students away from predictable contemporary graphic/editorial design, encouraging them to explore concepts, philosophies and studies, and also to develop their discourse and their ability to clearly justify both the theme of the artifact and the graphic choices made.

In my case, I chose to research a musical subgenre I enjoy: barber beats. This introductory research sought to understand the origins of the style, its influences and its relationship with other aesthetics up to the current repertoire. This path culminated in the construction of a timeline relating the genre to the lo-fi aesthetic of the 1950s.
After the research phase, I began developing the artifact. The first mock-ups reflected graphic solutions typical of contemporary design, but I later focused on finding an approach that would make the object singular.
The result presented in this exhibition is a visual representation of noise moving toward a state of attunement. This idea was applied to both the textual and the graphic components. The artifact was structured in three parts — the graphic timeline of styles, the analytical provocation and the graphic contemplation — using different papers to heighten the visual and tactile experience of “noise”.
