Sacred and Terrible Air
Bernardo Xavier
A self-proposed project for the Project course, in which the Estonian novel Püha ja õudne lõhn (Sacred and Terrible Air), written by Robert Kurvitz, was repaginated and re-edited. The proposal arose in response to the cancellation of the official translation of the work, and to the community effort that subsequently emerged among fans to translate it themselves. This book is therefore my personal contribution to that initiative, using those same translations and, through them, arriving at a finished object. At the same time, I committed to exploring more experimental solutions in keeping with the equally abstract and non-linear nature of the narrative, inspired by concrete poetry and by works such as House of Leaves, trying to find the ideal balance between respect for the work as it was originally conceived and my ambitions as a designer and editor.
