Otherness in Cinema

Otherness in Cinema
Isa Imay, Maria Luisa Kenup, Mariana Shinohara and Rafaela Ribeiro

The publication is the result of a collaboration between groups of students. While one group (the Editors) was responsible for selecting and organizing the content, the design team developed the publication’s graphic identity. The collected essays analyze the role of the “other” and its social representation in cinema over the decades.

The publication is organized into five main themes, identified through a color system that eases navigation and reinforces the individuality of each section. Each theme was assigned a color associated with the minority group under analysis: pink for Sexuality, purple for Feminine Representation, light blue for Gender Identities, blue for Disability and terracotta for Westernization.

The typographic selection is an extension of the concept. Priority was given to typefaces developed by designers belonging to the groups represented in the essays, turning typography into an instrument of visibility and representation.

Much of the available visual archive had technical limitations. Applying layers of noise made it possible to unify the images, turning a limitation of the source material into an aesthetic decision consistent with the project’s visual identity.
