Diário

Diário — Alice Alves, Inês V. Teixeira e Marta Babau

Diário
Alice Alves, Inês V. Teixeira and Marta Babau

This project and specimen presents a revival of an original alphabet, drawn from a historical source: a variable typeface for text setting with a complete character set.

The typeface was born from observing the volumes of Diário (Diary) by Miguel Torga, works in which writing is a continuous record of human experience, memory and reflection. As an editorial object, the diary creates an intimate relationship between text and reader, demanding a typeface able to sustain long reading while keeping its expressive character.

Diário is a transitional serif, according to the Responsive Vox Classification System, whose archetypes are Times and Baskerville.

The design process balanced tradition and the present, preserving the rhythm and legibility of classical editorial typography while introducing solutions suited to today’s digital contexts. Developed as a variable font, it explores formal flexibility without compromising the consistency of its identity.

It also seeks to reflect the human dimension of writing: the gesture of recording thoughts, emotions and events over time. Just as a diary gathers fragments of a life, this typeface brings together typographic memory and contemporary interpretation, turning a historical legacy into a new instrument for reading and expression.
