HUNT The Russian Taiga
Rafaela Ribeiro
The brief called for a publication that does not rely on text to explore a theme in a subversive way.

The starting theme is the world’s largest boreal forest, in Siberia, Russia. In HUNT, the taiga — usually portrayed through its fauna, flora or stereotyped images of the communities living there — is perceived as an emotional ecosystem. The main narrative rests largely on the work of Evgenia Arbugaeva and Alexis Pazoumian, photographers who document not only the landscape but also their personal relationship with the territory. Over these images appear interventions with photographs by Slava Mogutin, a Russian artist who documents queer communities in his homeland.
The overlap of these visual worlds breaks with a documentary reading of the taiga, introducing an atmosphere of unease and frenzy.
