The Cinema Of Agnès Varda
Catarina Silva
Developed for the Project course, the book began with the choice of a theme and a text that would later give rise to an artifact. The theme is the cinema of Agnès Varda, and the text is Delphine Bénézet’s The Cinema of Agnès Varda: Resistance and Eclecticism.

The project explores the idea of “gleaning”. In The Gleaners and I (2000), Varda relates the act of gleaning to her own creative process: with a curious, attentive eye she gathers ordinary everyday things and turns them into material for her films.
From this concept, the aim was a reading experience based on discovery, discontinuity and the unexpected. Images are set against the text with tight margins, elements drift to the edges of the page, and the page numbers — deliberately loud and never in a fixed place — heighten the sense of unpredictability. All this tension and discontinuity recreate the idea of “stumbling upon” things, like Varda’s chance encounters with everyday objects, such as the heart-shaped potato she finds in The Gleaners and I. The lightweight paper reinforces the experience, allowing show-through and overlaps between pages.
