Novo Som
Análise do Espólio Luso-Africano da Fonoteca Municipal do Porto (1960-1992)
Jorge Santos Duarte

This study analyzes the collection of Luso-African vinyl records (1960–1992) held by the Fonoteca Municipal do Porto, resulting in two editorial objects: a visual and analytical catalog and a project report. The catalog identifies and characterizes the collection — artists, labels and organizations — selects the covers of greatest graphic and artistic relevance and analyzes their visual composition, highlighting the diversity and historical importance of the records. The report places the records within the sociocultural movements of the time, focusing on the Imperial Vocation, Gilberto Freyre’s Luso-tropicalism and Cosmopolitanism as ideological constructs of Portuguese colonialism, and documents the methodology used to analyze the collection. It concludes that the objects enhance the value of the Luso-African collection, showing its links to historical contexts and graphic practices, and reinforce the dynamic role of the Fonoteca.
