Between and Beyond the Binary
Hugo Costa
A visual atlas that explores gender through a relational, non-hierarchical system of images. The main publication brings together figures and icons from art history and popular culture who challenge gender norms and binary representations, arranged in diptychs that establish formal and conceptual relationships. Color acts as a narrative structure, forming an open cycle that starts in grayscale, reaches maximum chromatic intensity and returns to gray, evoking a spectrum without rigid boundaries.

As a theoretical and research companion, a smaller publication deepens this visual narrative through texts by Judith Butler and Sasha Geffen, as well as interviews with fashion designer Rosário and visual artist Luca Mastroianni. It analyzes historical and contemporary representations of gender along the axes of performance, transformation and identity, using color as a metaphor for gender fluidity and questioning its historical association with normative categories.
