The potential of graphic industry waste

The potential of graphic industry waste reused in visual and experimental practices of graphic design.
Catarina Santos Costa Ferreira

Spolia (Latin: “spoils”; spolium) is a term used to describe the process of removing stones from old buildings and monuments in ruins to reuse them in new constructions and for decorative purposes. Originating from architecture, the term was mainly used in antiquity.

To present a new approach in the interaction process between designer and industry, rethinking solutions for handling industrial waste and introducing new ones that promote sustainable and positive methods for all involved.

To encourage alternative design exercises that support experimentation and free creation, as well as new ways of thinking about white space on paper, influenced by the visual content that already exists on it. Here, this variability is achieved through the use of industrial graphic waste.
