Reinventing academic access: design, digitalization, and dialogue at U. Porto Press and in the journal Espaço Público/Public Space
Francisca Fradinho Alves
The digital era has profoundly transformed the field of academic publishing. In addition to democratizing access to knowledge, it requires adapting content for online formats and reinventing graphic design practices to meet new demands for interactivity, accessibility, and user engagement.
This project emerged when U. Porto Press identified two sub-projects to develop: creating a platform to freely share high-quality content and establishing a brand identity for an online scientific journal.
The work explores the advantages of design in digital objects, focusing on interactivity and the distinctions between print and digital publications, with special attention to creating a bilingual logo. This represents a rare opportunity to take a practical approach to visual identity for multilingual academic publications.
Thus, the case of U. Porto Press and the journal Espaço Público/Public Space offers a practical study for editors, designers, and academics involved in digitization processes.
