Yellow scale
Marta Carvalho

Yellow scale is a publication based on the brief to create a large-format (A3) publication made up exclusively of operational images — images whose purpose is not aesthetic or symbolic representation but the performance of a practical function.

The publication consists of a series of photographs of objects found on the streets of Porto. These images use a familiar reference object (the post-it) to make it easier to grasp at once the size of something unknown.

Each image was printed on loose A3 sheets. On each sheet, the front shows the photograph of an object next to the post-it as a reference object, while the back reproduces the same object and post-it at actual size. This offers two complementary readings: one mediated by the scale of the post-it and another that reveals the true size of the object.

The editorial choice not to bind the sheets permanently, but to keep them loose, reinforces the interactive character of the publication. The reader is invited to handle, order and rearrange the images, creating their own visual paths and new interpretative relationships.
