For Art Direction, students were asked to create an original periodical with its own editorial identity, able to sustain a coherent conceptual line over a biannual format. The group created VARIOUS, a periodical that works as a visual archive of the marginal, focusing on functional design that survives on the edges of public attention.

The starting point was the observation that everyday graphic objects, rigorous and fascinating in their aesthetics, are rarely recognized or looked at as such. The response was an art direction that gives visibility and editorial dignity to this overlooked visual culture, treating it with the care and sophistication usually reserved for design’s “noble” subjects. The publication thus takes on a curatorial role, cataloging and reframing these marginal elements as objects of aesthetic and cultural interest.

Conceptually, VARIOUS questions established hierarchies within visual culture, proposing that aesthetic value is not reserved for “intentional” design but can be found in what is functional, anonymous and neglected. Formally, it promotes good practice in art direction and editing — coherence between editorial concept, content selection and graphic system — and reinforces design as a critical tool for observing and re-signifying the everyday.
