A narrative built from the analysis of three previously selected objects; keywords associated with those objects then gave rise to an illustrated visual interpretation of the story in editorial form. The objects chosen were a pair of handmade Pokémon Ditto earrings, my personal calendar and a photograph of my cat, Olivia. The ideas associated with them were, respectively, the ghostly figure of the earrings, a poor memory and difficulty placing events in time, and the affection I feel for my cat.

From there, a small tribute book was created that follows “the creature”. The creature becomes a ghost after its death, yet it is free of all its memories – it does not remember who it is, where it is, or why it is condemned to remain on Earth even after death. The illustrations were meticulously drawn by hand over several weeks in graphite pencil, with only minor digital adjustments in Clip Studio Paint.

The book explores grief, sadness and the suppression of memories that follows a traumatic event. Through sarcastic, playful writing and a main character with an endearing design and demeanor, it achieves the central aim of this heavier narrative – an engaging story for all ages, an object that helps explain these topics, especially to younger readers. And, beyond that, a way to keep alive the memory of those we love most, whether they are still here or not.
