Masters’ example dissertations and projects

This list aims to provide a non-exclusive reference list with past MDGPE and other relevant masters’ dissertations and projects.

The following examples provide particularly interesting examples of all, or just a few, of the following items required from a complete master dissertation or project:

  • Clear and efficient structure;
  • Clear, concise, and objective (easy-to-read) writing;
  • Appropriate indexing, navigation, and meta elements (abstract, indexes, paratexts, etc.);
  • Comprehensive theoretical framework, grounded on a complete and up-to-date bibliography;
  • Detailed and rigorous methodology;
  • Appropriate, innovative, or disruptive graphic/editorial design;
  • A relevant contribution to the graphic and editorial design field of study or to the social, scientific, or professional communities;

Among other issues that may arise, or that are specific to each master dissertation or report.

MDGPE Dissertations

Carolina Ferreira, FBAUP (2014). Formas (In)Visíveis. https://repositorio-aberto.up.pt/handle/10216/77899

First and foremost, this is one of the most comprehensive examples of the MDGPE master’s program. It presents a very clear structure, succinct abstract, comprehensive and relevant theoretical framework that supports the empirical assessment, and finally and most importantly a very precise, rigorous, and well-documented field trial. The only issue is the lack of statistical relevance of the dataset.

MDGPE Project Reports

Although this is consists “formally” in a project, this an exemplar dissertation or project example. Very clear and complete structure, in-depth theoretical background, and literature review with an original interactive typography dimensions/categorization proposal. Using this proposal, Vânia has selected one of them and implemented a working prototype (a functional beta version) of an interactive typography tool to create interactive editorial compositions. The document not only focuses on the development of the platform and its iterations until reaching the final form but also includes an external assessment by a sample of professional and design student users, resulting in a final (book) showcase.

César Martiniano, FBAUP (2020) Archipelago Dada Um tipo de letra sem serifa humanista para composições visuais expressivas. https://repositorio-aberto.up.pt/handle/10216/130867

A very complete type design and production project that expands on the previously acquired knowledge. It describes current state-of-the-art font production tools and techniques. Grounded on solid cases analysis.

MDGPE Internship Reports

Ana Beatriz Viegas, FBAUP (2019).

This project presents a very detailed report about the adaptation of the Provisional Press in the northern Portugal higher education context. And especially its assessment and subsequent development iterations in a pedagogical environment.
