The assignment was open-ended with the objective of creating a unique book – whether in format or content. This work presents an anthropological study of Japanese toy franchises and their cultural impact, blending academic analysis with playful design elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 21×15 cm, the book invites a hands-on experience similar to flipping through a toy catalog. It utilizes recycled paper and halftone imagery reminiscent of 20th-century low-brow printed media. The cover and internal visuals explore the feedback loop between consumers and products, highlighting how toy sales capitalized on social anxieties and shaped the reputation of Japanese toys and media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The foreword introduces a classical serif typeface for anthropological analysis, abruptly interrupted by glitchy 8-bit pink typography. This juxtaposition sets a tone of “high irreverence” that permeates the work. Extensive text wraps and dynamic captions for toy images symbolize their role in transforming and ultimately becoming part of the consumer status quo. Graphic chapter headings appear skewed, spliced, and rotated, adding to the visual poetry and controlled chaos of the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
