The object explores ways to promote active, critical reading by subverting the norms of editorial design. The research started from the manifesto Designing Friction: A Call for Friction in Digital Culture by the Moniker collective, which advocates deliberately introducing friction into the interaction between user and information. Concepts such as discomfort, time delay, engage the body, non-positive and gamification were the project\u2019s starting points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the manifesto mainly addresses digital interface design, this approach was complemented by Richard Hendel\u2019s On Book Design, to identify the graphic mechanisms that make reading automatic and passive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By introducing moments of interruption and physical interaction, the design creates friction between reader and content, making the reading experience more conscious. One of the main devices is the inclusion of perforated pages that the reader must tear to access the information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
