Under the Word Design<\/strong>

Under the Word Design grew out of the brief for Advanced Studies in Editorial Design and Typography: a black-and-white publication, in vertical A4 (3:4), made with typography only, no images, designed to be leafed through, seen and read from start to finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I brought together three critical texts on the discipline, questioning the \u201cGlobal Style\u201d, the surface of style and the relationship between art, technology and deception in design. From there, I decided every page would be a surprise: nothing repeats in the same way, and readers never quite know what comes next \u2014 letters scattered across the cover, text overprinted until nearly illegible, pages rotated 90 degrees, mirrored reading, crossing and overlapping text blocks. It is a way of putting design itself into question through the experience of reading it, forcing the reader to slow down, turn the page and search for meaning, making reading an active rather than passive act, not just an exercise in quick visual consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
