Please note that confirmation of the official dates is mandatory in the academic system event news portal<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The 2024-25 edition debuted with 16 projects<\/strong> during the first “normal” season focusing on Typography, Editorial Design, and Urban Identity. Nevertheless, during this year, a total of 38 students<\/strong> \u2014 5 dissertations, 10 internships, and 23 design and development projects \u2014 explored a wide range of innovative topics from female visibility and musical heritage to materiality and mental health. These projects reflect how design impacts various spheres of contemporary society \u2014 bringing the total of concluded projects and dissertations for this cycle to 38 in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This final collection showcases a profound shift in the role of design, moving beyond mere aesthetics to become a critical tool for navigating contemporary global shifts. By balancing technological innovation and the almost ubiquitous and “always-on” immersion in the daily digital communication media with a necessary return to the analog and embodied experience, these works address the complex social, political, and cultural conflicts of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Works such as pictograms for health literacy<\/strong> or the investigation of design\u2019s impact on local markets’ identity<\/strong> showcase the power of design in driving social and cultural awareness. This also applies to studies on the presence of women in graffiti<\/strong> during the dictatorship and the digitalization of female artistic legacies. Projects related to illustration, like depictions of the introverted mind<\/strong> or the exploration of color psychology in children\u2019s literature<\/strong>, reveal a unique storytelling sensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Technological innovation and heritage preservation are also present, whether through the revival of early 20th-century typefaces<\/strong>, the study of Ukrainian Cyrillic scripts<\/strong>, or alternative techniques in post-digital zincogravura<\/strong>. Typography remains central in the rehabilitation of letterpress workshops<\/strong> and the creation of flexible visual systems for regional festivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are also reflections on branding, from sports clubs and music labels<\/strong> to sub-brands for national museums<\/strong>. Students investigated the evolution of editorial design, from eco-sustainable practices<\/strong> in top design studios to the role of books as memorial objects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Overall, the 38 graduates of 2025 demonstrate that the modern designer is a geostrategic agent<\/strong>, capable of addressing “root causes” rather than just surface-level aesthetics. Whether through the preservation of local markets or the archival of female visibility in art, they prove that design is essential for a future that is sustainable, beautiful, and\u2014above all\u2014together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Overall graduated students up to 2025: <\/em>322<\/p>\n\n\n\n The 2023-24 edition debuted with 3<\/strong> projects<\/strong> during the first season focusing on Social Design<\/strong>, Brand[ing] Management <\/strong>Political engagement, and Health Promotion through type design.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n During this year, an additional 21 students \u2014 5 dissertations<\/strong>, 4 internships<\/strong>, and 10 design and development projects \u2014 explored a wide range of innovative topics was explored from sustainability and social design to pop culture and typography, the projects reflect how design impacts various spheres of contemporary society\u2014bringing the total of concluded projects and dissertations to 24 <\/strong>in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Works such as communication campaigns for sustainable behaviors or magazines promoting diversity showcase the power of design in driving social change. This also applies to studies on the role of design in mental health and cultural decolonization. Projects related to illustration, like illustrated books exploring family memories or graphic narratives in manga style, reveal a unique storytelling sensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Technological innovation is also present, whether through artificial intelligence used in type design or digital chromatic typography, addressing issues like climate change. Typography remains central in educational board games and studies of traditional printing techniques, creatively bridging the past and present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are also reflections on branding, with controversial rebrandings and packaging for international markets. Students investigate the evolution of editorial design, from books for the visually impaired to reimagining digital academic design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Make sure to check this page soon for additional updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Overall graduated students up to 2024: 28<\/em><\/em>4<\/p>\n\n\n\n The 2023 “presentations’ season” has begun. This year, we had 6 students submitting their final dissertations and project\/internship reports during the first regular period. Topics mainly covered visual narratives and branding in a set of 1 dissertation, 3 internship reports<\/strong>, and 2 research & development projects<\/strong>. After the first deadline, another seven students submitted their projects and reports. Until the final submission deadline, another 24 students have submitted their research projects and internship reports. This means that in 2023, 30 new master’s students <\/span>will be finishing their research and development work<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Overall graduated students up to 2023: 260<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n 2022 was the “comeback” year from multiple COVID lockdowns into “normality.” During this year, 17 students<\/strong> finished<\/span> and presented their research and development work. Although no student presented during the first regular term, all 17 presentations were made during the extension period in an “in-person” mode. This year we have 2 Dissertations, 13 Project reports, 2 Internship reports<\/strong>, with topics that range from physical letterpress founding and fine papers to Risograph printing; from Portuguese graphical packaging to Brazilian arts and crafts heritage; from the role of women in photography, packaging and in modern culture movements; and, as \u2014this master could not be without\u2014 with topics addressing the (meta) materiality, legibility and ortho typography of reading materials and books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Overall graduated students up to 2022: 230<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n 2021 has produced a batch of 18 final presentations<\/span><\/strong>. Six students finished and presented their projects during the first “regular” period in an online and in-person mode session at FBAUP. Twelve others have finished and presented in an in-person mode. Projects cover a fantastic range of topics, from illustration to graphic novels, from book to cross-media magazine production, from analog printing to augmented reality, from academic to independent publishing, and from infographics to type design. Despite the difficulties and the psychological wear the second COVID year has brought to the students, we are incredibly proud that more than half of the enrolled students were resilient and able to produce and present such fantastic work. Nevertheless, an astonishing 35 students concluded<\/span> their projects<\/strong>.
